A bark hut at an Aboriginal health centre in Tasmania was set on fire and destroyed on Sunday morning.

On Monday the South East Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation said in a statement that the organisation was “disappointed to notify the Community that at approximately 2:30 am on Sunday morning, someone burned the Bark Hut and adjacent fence at the Primary Health Service in Cygnet”.

“This Bark Hut was lovingly created by Aboriginal Families and demonstrated the ongoing connection to culture and each other,” they said.

“No matter how it happened, this wasn’t just destroying something of SETACs, but something that the families involved created together.

“Regardless of whether this was a targeted attack, over the Invasion Day weekend, or a simple accident, if you have any further information, please contact the Police.”

In a statement to Pulse Tasmania, Tasmania Police confirmed the fire was “suspicious” and said it was under investigation.
