TIME magazine has named Tasmania’s wukalina Walk among the World’s Greatest Places for 2024.

The accolade marks the first time Tasmania has been featured on the list, which is curated annually by TIME’s editors and correspondents to highlight top travel destinations and experiences worldwide.

Tasmanian Palawa Elder and founder of wukalina Walk, Clyde Mansell, said sharing our stories and our history on cultural homeland is an integral part of the experience.

“It also allows us to increase employment, involve our young people and contribute to our self-determination, by creating more opportunities for the Palawa community,” Mr Mansell said.

“We’ve had comments over the years where guests have said it’s changed their lives and their whole thinking about how they should relate to Aboriginal people.”

The multi-day walk, guided by Aboriginal leaders, spans wukalina (Mt William National Park) and larapuna (Bay of Fires).”

It has received numerous accolades, including gold at the 2023 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Darwin.

Tourism Tasmania prioritises international visitors due to their significant economic impact on the state’s tourism sector.

Tasmanian Premier and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Jeremy Rockliff congratulated wukalina Walk for being recognised by TIME as one of the world’s greatest places, noting TIME’s list as a trusted travel resource for many global travellers.

“The tourism industry is one of our State’s success stories and we have no doubt TIME Magazine will influence readers to come and visit Tasmania,” Premier Rockliff said.
